dub.dad is a daily speaking practice: one task a day, done out loud and on camera. This page explains what we store, why, and how to have it deleted.
What we store
- Your progress. When you start, we create an account for you, even before you sign in. It holds your time zone, so your day starts at your midnight, and which tasks you’ve done, on which dates, and how long you spoke.
- Your recordings. After each task, the video or sound you recorded is uploaded to our server. Until the upload finishes, it’s kept in your browser.
- Your Google account, if you sign in with Google. We store your Google account ID and email address. Google also shares your name and profile picture, which we don’t keep. We never see your Google password or anything else in your Google account.
- Server logs. Like most websites, our server records IP addresses and the pages requested. We use them only to keep dub.dad running and secure, and keep them for a short time.
Camera and microphone
The camera and microphone are used only while you do a task, and only after you allow them. While you speak, the app follows along to show which line you’re on. It measures how loud your microphone is and, in browsers that can do it on your device, such as Chrome on a computer, recognises the words you read. Both happen on your device: neither the sound nor the words are sent anywhere for this. The first time, Chrome downloads its English speech model from Google. Nothing is sent to our server until a task ends.
How we use it
Only to run dub.dad: to show your next task, keep your progress, play your recordings back to you, and sign you in. Your recordings are private: only you can play them back. We don’t show ads, we don’t use analytics or tracking, and we don’t sell your data or share it with anyone except the services below, which run dub.dad for us.
Who else is involved
- Cloudflare delivers the website and passes requests to our server.
- Oracle Cloud hosts our server and database, where your progress and recordings are stored.
- Google handles signing in, if you use it, and serves the website’s fonts. When your browser loads the fonts, Google sees your IP address.
Cookies and browser storage
dd_sessionkeeps you signed in, and keeps your progress if you haven’t signed in. It lasts 180 days from your last visit.dd_oauthis used for up to 10 minutes while you sign in with Google.- Recordings waiting to be uploaded are kept in your browser’s storage.
We don’t use advertising or tracking cookies.
Keeping and deleting your data
You can delete any recording at any time from Your recordings. This deletes the recording itself; the date and length of the take stay, so your progress still counts.
Delete my account, at the bottom of Your recordings, deletes your account, progress and recordings straight away. You can also email [email protected] and we’ll do it for you.
If you’ve signed in, we keep your account and progress until you delete them. If you haven’t, they’re tied to this browser: if you clear its cookies, they can’t be recovered, and if you don’t use dub.dad in this browser for 180 days, we delete them automatically, along with your recordings.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
